Bangladesh appeared to be batted out of the game as Sri Lanka continued its dominance in the second and final cricket Test, reaching 411-5 at lunch on Day 2 at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram today.
Captain Dhananjaya de Silva led the charge, batting on 70 not out with Kamindu Mendis on 17 at the first interval of the day. Both of the batters hit twin centuries in the first Test to play a vital contribution to crushing Bangladesh by 328 runs.
Sri Lanka lost just Dinesh Chandimal on the second day’s morning session before putting its nose ahead firmly.
De Silva, ably supported by Chandimal, played in aggressive fashion to give Sri Lanka a further edge in the match after they resumed at 314-4.
Chandimal who scored 9 and 0 in the first Test, found some form and frustrated Bangladesh further.
Chandimal raised his 26th test fifty off 85 balls, hitting pacer Hasan Mahmud for a boundary through mid-off.
Just after the fifty, he was undone by left-arm spinner Shakib Al Hasan (2-89) to be dismissed for 59 off 104, ending an 86-run partnership with de Silva.
De Silva also struck a boundary off left-arm spinner Taijul Islam to bring up his 14th fifty off 70 balls and appeared to be firm to head toward his third straight century.
He hit six fours and two sixes in his innings, playing 108 balls so far.
Kamindu Mendis hit three consecutive boundaries after his arrival into the crease to get off things smoothly.
Earlier on Day 1, the top three batters of Sri Lanka reached fifty but none of them converted to a century.
No.3 batter Kusal Mendis hit 93, Dimuth Karunaratne made 86 and his fellow opener Nishan Madushka added 57.
Hasan Mahmud who took two wickets on Day 1 couldn’t add any to finish on 2-89.
